Almost Trying — Feature Film Casting Call

Project Type: Independent feature film
Genre: Character-driven dramatic comedy
Union Status: Non-union

Filming Location: Sevier County, Tennessee, primarily in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area

Anticipated Shoot Dates: October 2026
Principal Photography: Eight shooting days
Compensation: Paid; rates vary by role and position

Local Hiring: Tennessee and regional actors are strongly encouraged to submit

STORYLINE

During one unusually complicated day, a rideshare driver in the Smoky Mountains encounters passengers whose problems, choices, and relationships gradually force him to confront the direction of his own life.

The film begins as a grounded situational comedy and develops into a more emotional story about avoidance, responsibility, and what it means to be fully present in your own life.

Comedy must be played naturally. We are not looking for exaggerated sitcom performances or artificial Southern stereotypes.

CONTENT NOTICE

The screenplay contains strong language and adult humor.

Casting

PRINCIPAL SUPPORTING ROLES

DAISY

Woman, late 20s to mid-30s | Principal Supporting | Approximately four to five days | Authentic Southern/Appalachian accent required
A lifelong East Tennessee woman who is warm, funny, perceptive, and much stronger than Chaz realizes. Daisy loves deeply but has grown tired of waiting for someone else to decide what he wants. She wants a real future and will not continue building her life around another person’s potential. The role requires emotional intelligence, quiet strength, exceptional chemistry with Chaz, and the ability to communicate disappointment without losing Daisy’s warmth.

SHILOH

Man, late 20s to late 30s | Principal Supporting | Approximately three to four days | Authentic Southern/Appalachian accent required
Chaz’s closest friend and another rideshare driver. Shiloh is crude, laid-back, unpredictable, and guided by a form of logic that makes complete sense only to him. He is effortlessly funny because he believes every word he says and never recognizes himself as the comic relief. Beneath his eccentric personality, Shiloh is loyal, sincere, and genuinely invested in Chaz’s life.

JOLENE

Woman, late 20s to mid-30s | Principal Supporting | Approximately two days | Authentic Southern/Appalachian accent preferred
A Tennessee native returning home after a year in Chicago. Jolene is sharp, guarded, and darkly funny, but she carries guilt and emotional exhaustion beneath her confidence. She recognizes something familiar in Chaz’s instinct to avoid the past by changing locations. The role requires significant dramatic range, natural conversational timing, and the ability to reveal vulnerability gradually.
The role includes simulated hallucinogen use and emotionally serious dialogue concerning depression and guilt.

FEATURED SUPPORTING ROLES

MATT

Man, 35–55 | Featured Supporting | One day
A loud, intoxicated, and determined man devoted to his longtime best friend. Matt initially appears to be a purely comic personality, but his rambling philosophy about friendship reveals genuine loyalty and unexpected emotional intelligence. He is capable of making terrible decisions while still understanding what it means to show up for another person. The role requires a strong character actor who can balance big comedy with sincerity.

CARLA JEAN

Woman, late 40s to late 50s | Featured Supporting | One day | Southern/Appalachian accent preferred
A newly divorced Southern woman determined to celebrate her freedom and prove that she is still desirable. Carla Jean is bold, flirtatious, intoxicated, and completely unfiltered. Beneath her party energy is a woman confronting how lonely it is to spend years beside someone who is emotionally absent. The performer must move fearlessly between adult comedy, humor, and quiet emotional truth.

The role contains explicit dialogue.

CORBIN

Man, early to late 30s | Featured Supporting | One day
A successful practitioner who is polished, analytical, and quietly confident. Corbin sees problems clearly and believes they should be addressed before they become painful. He is intelligent and particular without being cold, arrogant, or antagonistic. His decisiveness and emotional maturity provide an unspoken contrast to Chaz.

DAY PLAYERS

ANNABELLE GRACE

Woman, mid-20s to mid-30s | Day Player | One day | Authentic Southern/Appalachian accent required
A runaway bride in the middle of a reckless romantic escape. Annabelle Grace is bold, impulsive, and completely certain that she has made the right choice, even as the situation around her becomes increasingly dangerous. She speaks her mind, takes control quickly, and refuses to apologize for choosing what she wants. The performer must bring tremendous energy, comic authority, and convincing chemistry with Boone.

BOONE

Man, mid-20s to mid-30s | Day Player | One day | Authentic Southern/Appalachian accent required
The earnest young man escaping alongside Annabelle Grace. Boone is romantic, impulsive, and torn between his love for the bride and his loyalty to his best friend. He keeps trying to explain himself long after silence would be the wiser choice. Boone should feel sincere and sympathetic rather than foolish or calculating.

TIFFANY

Woman, 40–55 | Day Player | One day
An affluent tourist who experiences life as something to be carefully arranged, recorded, and presented. Tiffany is demanding, image-conscious, and accustomed to directing everyone around her, including her own family. She does not believe she is being unreasonable; she believes she is improving the experience. The humor comes from her complete confidence and lack of self-awareness.

BRETT

Man, 40–55 | Day Player | One day
Tiffany’s enthusiastic husband, who has embraced a carefully imagined version of Southern culture during the family vacation. Brett is well-meaning, vain, and convinced that his new appearance has transformed how others see him. He mistakes laughter for admiration and never realizes how badly he stands out. The role requires committed physical comedy without treating Brett as a cartoon.

MORGAN

Woman, 18+ to play mid-to-late teens | Day Player | One day
Tiffany and Brett’s intelligent, emotionally exhausted daughter. Morgan observes her parents with the detached fascination of someone documenting an unfolding social experiment. Her humor is dry, precise, and delivered without any visible effort to be funny. She should be cutting and highly observant without seeming hateful.

BARTENDER

Any gender, 30–50 | Day Player | One day | Tennessee-area performer preferred
An experienced local bartender accustomed to tourists, oversized personalities, and people trying too hard to impress one another. The Bartender immediately understands the social dynamics of the room but has no need to comment on them. This performer helps establish the reality of the location through confidence and understatement. Actual bartending or hospitality experience is helpful.

GARY

Man, 35–55 | Day Player | One day
Matt’s longtime best friend and the more grounded half of their partnership. Gary is frustrated, exhausted, and accustomed to cleaning up the consequences of Matt’s decisions. His anger is real, but so is the loyalty beneath it. Matt and Gary must feel like men who have embarrassed, rescued, and forgiven each other for years.

ORION

Man, 30–70 | Day Player | One day
A serious, guarded traveler carrying unusual objects he refuses to explain. Orion behaves like a man who knows more about them than he is willing to admit, although it remains unclear whether anything supernatural is actually occurring. He is private, intense, and increasingly frustrated by Shiloh’s behavior. The character must be played with complete seriousness and never as a theatrical mystic.

BROCK

Man, 30–45 | Day Player | One day
An entitled out-of-town rideshare passenger whose minor discomfort rapidly becomes a personal emergency. Brock immediately casts himself as the victim and expects everyone else to treat his panic as reasonable. He is confrontational, self-absorbed, and genuinely frightened by what is happening to him. The role requires energetic physical comedy grounded in believable panic.

CASSIE

Woman, 25–45 | Day Player | One day | Authentic Southern/Appalachian accent required
A gas-station clerk who knows the local community, recognizes trouble immediately, and has little patience for foolish behavior. Cassie is practical, sharp-tongued, and almost impossible to intimidate. During a chaotic incident, she remains more irritated than frightened because she knows the people involved too well to grant them the dignity they expect. Her dry authority makes her the calm center of the sequence.

DUKE

Man, late 20s to late 30s | Day Player | One day | Authentic Southern/Appalachian accent required
A desperate local man attempting something far beyond his confidence or ability. Duke wants to appear threatening, but panic, poor planning, and the familiarity of everyone around him continually undermine him. He is more pathetic than villainous, although his actions still have real consequences. The performer must balance tension and comedy while treating Duke’s desperation seriously.

TODD

Man, late 30s to early 50s | Day Player | One day
An irritated tourist who enters an already chaotic situation carrying a grievance of his own. Todd is self-important, argumentative, and convinced that his complaint deserves immediate attention regardless of what else is happening. He has the confidence of a man who believes customer service follows him everywhere. The performer must create a memorable personality quickly without pushing for laughs.

MELISSA

Woman, late 30s to early 50s | Day Player | One day
Todd’s wife and one of the few people reacting to an absurd situation as though it is genuinely dangerous. Melissa begins frightened and becomes increasingly angry and disgusted as everyone around her treats the chaos as normal. Her reactions help ground the sequence without diminishing its comedy. She and Todd should feel like a recognizable married couple rather than a comedy act.

JUNIPER

Woman, mid-20s to mid-40s | Day Player | One day
A calm, enigmatic woman whose quiet confidence suggests she may possess an unusual influence over the people around her. Juniper never raises her voice or explains herself more than necessary. Whether she is supernatural, psychologically perceptive, or simply very skilled at controlling Ryan remains uncertain. The role requires stillness, intelligence, and subtle authority rather than theatrical mystery.

RYAN

Man, mid-20s to mid-40s | Day Player | One day
Juniper’s boyfriend, an ordinary Massachusetts guy increasingly convinced that something about their relationship is beyond his control. Ryan is blunt, anxious, and frustrated. He loves Juniper while also being genuinely unsettled by her. The comedy depends on precise timing and a believable, complicated relationship between them.

VOICE ROLE

APP VOICE

Any gender, adult voice | Recurring Voice Role | One recording session with possible pickups
The bright, polished corporate voice of the rideshare app that accompanies Chaz throughout his workday. It delivers directions, encouragement, warnings, and customer-service language with the same unwavering positivity. The voice never recognizes the difference between an ordinary ride and complete chaos. The performance should be pleasant, impersonal, and subtly irritating without becoming robotic or sinister.

FEATURED NON-SPEAKING ROLE

ANGELA

Woman, late 20s to mid-30s | Featured Non-Speaking Role | One day
A woman from Chaz’s life whose brief appearance reveals an important part of his history. Angela begins the sequence hopeful and emotionally open before realizing that Chaz has made a devastating choice. She has no dialogue, so the entire performance depends on her eyes, expressions, and physical behavior. This role requires a performer capable of powerful, restrained close-up acting.

FEATURED BACKGROUND AND SPECIALTY ROLES

DAISY’S FRIEND

Woman, 20s–30s | Featured Background

A close friend who appears comfortable in the local social environment and shares an easy familiarity with Daisy. Line-dancing experience is preferred.

FEATURED PARTY GUEST

Woman, 30–60 | Featured Background

A guest who receives a brief individual moment during a crowded celebration. The performer must be comfortable taking simple physical direction.

MALE ENTERTAINER

Man, 21–40 | Featured Specialty Background

An entertainer appearing at a private celebration. The performer must be comfortable appearing shirtless and performing simple choreographed movement. No nudity or simulated sexual activity is required.

JOLENE’S COUSIN

Any gender, 20s–40s | Featured Non-Speaking Background

A family member who shares a brief but emotionally meaningful moment with Jolene. The performer must communicate warmth, concern, and familiarity without dialogue.

BLUES MUSICIANS

Two performers, preferably 55 or older | Featured Specialty Background

Experienced musicians who can genuinely perform guitar and/or harmonica. We are looking for authentic musical ability, personality, and the natural connection of people accustomed to playing together.

Actors may submit for more than one role but should clearly identify their preferred role.
